Book Review: "Breathless" by Rachel Brookes

(Breathe, Novella 1.5)
Synopsis:

One look from Savannah Rae was all it took for Tate Connors to fall.

From the first moment he laid eyes on her, his world was irrevocably shaken. He’s willing to accept that his life will never be the same again, but when she has to leave for New York the distance becomes more than either of them expected.

Tate is left alone with not only an empty bed but also a thousand thoughts running through his head. Insecurities soar as he wonders if he could ever really be the kind of man Savannah deserves.

When the demons of his past continue to threaten the future he so desperately craves, Tate knows he has to make the ultimate choice. Risk destroying his relationship and his family with one life changing decision, or gamble on fate and hope the past stays exactly that…the past.

Review:
5 Stars!

HOLY TATE CONNORS!
Fabulous 5 star continuation of the Breathe Series!
When I heard that Rachel Brookes was going to be writing a novella from Tate’s POV, I could barely contain my excitement. Let me tell you, IT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. I was so excited to get into Tate Connors head and see things from his perspective. He is such a swoony book boyfriend. The absolute best panty melter out there!

“One night hadn’t been enough for me—it would never be enough. She was the perfect drug to me. She gave me the hit I needed and kept me craving for more.”

Breathless picks up where Just Breathe left off, with a pregnant Sav heading to New York City for a month to work. To say that Sav leaving was hard on Tate would be an understatement. I thought our strong swoony Tate was going to fall apart until he makes the decision to go to New York City for a visit.

“She would forever be the person who threw me on my ass and made me take the shaky steps to become whole again—slightly fractured but still as close to being whole as I had been for so many years.”

Nothing bad can happen when you decide to surprise the love of your life in NYC right?

Wrong.

Emotions run wild as Tate announces his decision to delve into the past in order to move forward in his relationship with Sav. In Breathless, we see the first real fight between Tanzi and Tate over their past. Will his persistence to dig up the past change everything or will it end up bringing them all closer together?

“You are going to get hurt, Tate. You know I can’t handle it when you get hurt. I don’t have a good feeling about this. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Why do you have to be so fucking stubborn?”

Though there isn’t as much angst in Breathless as there was in Just Breathe, I really enjoyed seeing a softer side of Tate. He had his asshole moments, as you will find out when you read, but he really showed a different demeanor in this book. Of course, the reader also gets to see Sav be her feisty self as well.

One thing the book doesn’t lack is steam. Rachel Brookes definitely knows how to write steamy scenes. Office rooms, hotels, etc. The chemistry between Tate and Sav is always evident in their sex scenes. The connection they get from being intimate shows just how strongly they feel about one another.

“Her eyes flickered between anger and lust. Whatever our next words or moves were would determine everything. It could make or break us. Her hands snapped straight to my belt, pulling me with force towards her body, causing her to stumble as I slammed into her.”

Trust issues and misunderstandings triumph in the end and the readers are left with a heartbreaking cliffhanger. Obviously, I can’t wait to see what happens next on the crazy ride that is Tate and Savannah.

“The feeling that my world was crashing down around me consumed me and I couldn’t do a damn thing about it.”

Book 3 cannot come soon enough!
(Oh and I would like to add that I loved Jack and Tanzi just as much in Breathless as I did Just Breathe, maybe even more! I would love to read more about them!)

The Breathe Series

(Breathe, Book 1)
Synopsis:

For Savannah Rae, living life without her parents was unimaginable. But being blamed for her first love’s suicide? That destroyed every part of who she was.

Gone were the days of innocence, happiness, and dreams. Now her days simply meant attempting to survive. In her mind, her only means for that was replacing her grief with men, booze and the fast life. And for five years, it worked.

When an opportunity to leave the nightmares of her past in Australia opens up, she takes it. Los Angeles beckons - with hopes of late nights, new beginnings, and the promise of a string of endless men to distract her, she can’t wait to dive in.

One thing she didn’t count on was meeting her match.

In the eyes of outsiders, Tate Connors has it all; the ultimate LA bachelor who is content with his lifestyle of wild nights, women and one night stands. He's Mr. Unpredictable with looks that could destroy any woman with one glance.

The craziness of Los Angeles throws them into the chaotic path of each other. Savannah becomes the perfect game, and Tate becomes the ultimate prey. Lines are crossed, emotions are smashed, and the idea of who they truly are begins to be tangled.

However, one thing will become clear.

They are more alike than either one could ever have imagined.

Rachel sometimes forgets to eat, sometimes forgets to sleep and sometimes can’t remember the last time she cleaned her apartment but that’s because she is in a long term relationship with her laptop and is constantly writing.
When she does step away from her laptop she can be found taking too many photos, making scrumptious cocktails, laughing at Adam Sandler movies and spending her time with her amazing family and friends.
With her first novel, Just Breathe, due to be released in July 2013, her dream of releasing a book will become reality. With another three books already taking up her mind, she cannot wait to start this crazy ride.
