Will a mysterious disappearance bring two broken hearts together...or tear them apart?

THE WAY TO HER HEART by Amy Reece
YA Romantic Suspense
Publisher: Limitless Publishing
Release Date: March 29, 2016
— SYNOPSIS —
No amount of counseling can bring Josh Harris back to his old self.

After a tragedy that changed his life forever, eighteen-year-old Josh has lived in a year-long fog of medication and confusion. It’s all he can do to not think about his dad—a culinary genius who raised him in the kitchen. Thankfully, Josh inherited his golden palate and sixth sense for cooking, which is the only thing that makes sense anymore.

For a seventeen-year-old girl, life can’t get much worse…

Bernie Abeyta is a senior in high school and lives with her drug-addicted mother, but has managed to keep her grades up so she can get into college. With her father in prison and her mom’s sleazy boyfriend getting too close for comfort, Bernie turns to her best friend Gabby Rodriguez for help, but discovers Gabby has gone missing. Distressed over her friend’s sudden disappearance, Bernie resorts to living out of her car while she looks for answers and tries to avoid foster care.

Part love, part mystery, part cookbook—and all heart.

During economics class, Josh finds himself captivated by his new project partner, Bernie. As they grow closer, he insists Bernie move in with him and his mother. Furthermore, he offers to help look for Gabby.

Bernie refuses to believe Gabby ran away, and she’s determined to get to the bottom of the mystery—no matter how great the danger to herself.

Will Bernie’s gritty life be too much for Josh to handle? Or will he fight for The Way to Her Heart?

Josh
She cut her hair. Josh realized he was staring at the girl in the next row and pulled his gaze back to his notebook as the teacher droned on about supply and demand curves. I don’t care for short hair on girls. Yet he couldn’t keep his eyes off her. He didn’t even know her name. On Friday her hair had been long, the silky black tresses reaching below her shoulder blades. Today, he could see the back of her neck. He could see how long and slender it was and watched as she reached around to feel it, seeming surprised, perhaps still unused to the short cut. She pushed the long front layer behind her ear. The purple streak is kind of cute, though. He once again forced his gaze back to his notes, reminding himself that he had a girlfriend; a beautiful girlfriend with long blonde hair. Focus, Harris. Get your mind off the pretty girl with the short hair. She was pretty. He’d always thought so, even though he didn’t know her name. He’d heard it; wasn’t it something weird? Enough! Supply, demand. That’s all you need to think about.

“So, for the next few weeks you will be paired up with one of your classmates as we launch a new project designed to help you experience some of what it takes to create and stick to a household budget.” Mr. Griego picked up a stack of index cards from his desk. “I have created a scenario with careers and incomes for each couple. Some of you have children, and some don’t. Every few days you will get a new financial situation you have to deal with. Each week of this project will be the equivalent of one month for your budget. You will turn in a complete six month budget, along with a written report at the end of the project. Each couple will also give a five-minute oral presentation.” He started calling names and handing out index cards. There were groans and titters of laughter as the names were called because some of the couples were same-sex. “Josh Harris and Bernie Abeyta.” No one in the class said anything or laughed at the pairing. Josh wasn’t surprised; he had pretty much fallen off the radar over a year ago. He stood and walked to the front of the room to retrieve the index card.

“Who’s Bernie Abeyta?” he asked quietly. Great. I’m paired with a guy. Just what I needed.

The girl with the short, purple hair raised her hand. “Me.” She sounded bored.

“Okay. I’m, uh, I’m Josh.” He stood in front of her desk, awkwardly shifting from side to side.

“Yeah. I’m Bernie.” She glanced up quickly, meeting his gaze, then looked away.

“You have the last fifteen minutes of class to exchange contact information, phone numbers, email addresses, whatever you need to get in touch with your partner. Most of the project work will need to be on your own time as you will need to visit grocery stores and do some online research,” Mr. Griego said.

Josh sat down in the newly vacated desk in front of Bernie. “So.” He waved the index card. “One of us is a teacher and the other is an attorney. Which do you want to be?”

Bernie shrugged. “It doesn’t really matter to me. You choose.”

He looked at her, a half-smile on his face. Close-up he noticed that she had beautiful, smooth, light-brown skin and her eyes were so dark they looked black. She didn’t wear much makeup; she didn’t need to. “Fine. I’ll be the teacher. You can be the attorney.” She looked up quickly. “Is that okay?”

She shrugged again. “Sure. It doesn’t matter. Do we have kids?”

“Yeah, we have two: an eight-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son. So, I guess we should exchange phone numbers and email.” He scrawled his information on a page of his notebook and tore it out, handing it to her.

She took the page, staring at it blankly for a moment before tearing a piece of paper out of her own notebook. “Here’s my email.”

He looked at it. “What’s your cell number?”
“I don’t have one. Just the email.”

“Oh. Okay.” Josh had never heard of anyone his age who didn’t have a cell phone. “So, do you want to get together tonight to get started on this? We could meet at my house. Or yours. Whatever you want.”

“Yours. Here.” She pushed the paper back at him. “Write your address. I have to work until seven. I can be there around seven-thirty. Is that okay?” She didn’t meet his eyes.

“Uh, sure. That’s fine. Here.” He handed the paper back. “Do you need a ride or anything?”

“No.”

“Oh. Great. So, I’ll, uh, see you tonight. I guess.” He had never been so tongue-tied around a girl.

“Yeah.” She turned her attention back to her notebook, clearly dismissing him.

Josh returned to his seat, chagrined. I seem to have lost my touch. Then again, he hadn’t really been trying very hard for a long time. He used to be much better at this whole thing: friends, girls, talking. Now he simply didn’t have the energy anymore. It was October of his senior year and he was biding his time until he could graduate and move on with his life. She’s really pretty, though. He groaned inwardly as he packed his notebook and shouldered his backpack. He knew he had no business noticing how pretty his new partner was; he should be thinking about how gorgeous his girlfriend had looked in her cheerleading uniform that morning during the pep rally. She was beautiful, sweet, and had stuck by him through a seriously dark time in his life. He had really been phoning it in lately with Kayleigh. Jeez, he could do better. He merged with the flow of humanity in the hallway, determined to do right by her, starting tomorrow at lunch.

#BookishConfession — Reading more than one book at a time...

I am one of those readers that thought that reading more than one book at a time was insane and 100% not possible.

How could you focus on ONE book with another plot running through your head? I even thought that doing this would not be fair to authors because you would not be fully invested in their book...

I WAS WRONG.

Recently I've been reading 2-3 books at a time!!

What?

YES!

With my ADHD I never thought this could be a possibility for me, but it has been AMAZING! I've even combined reading with listening to an audio book — I read at night and listen to the audio book during the day while I work. Win, win!

With my busy, busy daily schedules, my reading time had suffered A LOT and I was noticing that I would fall asleep fairly quickly once I started reading in bed. Mind you, this still happens some nights, but I also noticed that if I started a new book (sometimes deadlines will motivate a girl to do this! Ha!), I would get invested in the new story line and stay up longer. See, some nights I feel like reading a more angst-driven book, while other nights, I'm in the mood for a lighter read.

So I alternate.

Currently, I am in the middle of 2 books. One YA Romantic Suspense and one Contemporary Romance. And I'm fully invested in BOTH.

Do YOU read more than one book at a time? If so, do you have a maximum number of books? Feel free to comment below or email me (heabookshelf@gmail.com) about this!  The most I've read is 3 at a time and it has worked out! Now, when it comes to reviewing them, I've struggled a bit because "reviews due" have gone from just the 1 to 2-3 — at a time! Haven't fallen behind on deadlines just yet, though! LOL!

- EXCERPT -
Two days passed and Nick hadn’t called again. I couldn’t blame him. After all, I had pushed for him to be honest and then had bailed on him. I’m sure he was mad at me for telling him he could tell me the truth and then I punished him for it—and he would be right. I couldn’t handle the icky feelings, and instead of being a big girl and dealing with them, I came home from school and retreated into the world of books. A world where people were kidnapped, jewels were stolen, but nobody’s heart ever got broken because in my favorite series, The Raven Chronicles, Raven’s boyfriend, Fernando, was ever faithful and loyal and would never even look at another girl. He was the perfect book boyfriend. In other words, he was fictional and didn’t exist.

I saw I had a text from Simone. Oh great, maybe she was asking for my blessing to go out with Nick, or if I was still planning to go to Watson High School next year so she could make out with him in a different hallway from my locker.

Simone: Are you mad at me? Nick said you’re upset because you found out he used to like me.

Oh fabulous. He told her the whole gross story. Well, of course he did, seeing as how he was always over with her clique and he could tell the love of his life anything.

- REVIEW: 5 STARS! -
Brilliant literature! A true work of art! I cannot say this enough: Sylvain Reynard is an author you should not miss! All his books have mesmerized me from beginning to end, and The Shadow was no different. If you have NOT read The Raven you should stop reading this review here. The Shadow is a direct continuation of that novel so this review, while spoiler-free where The Shadow is concerned, will ruin The Raven for you.  I read The Shadow in December, but with the kids, work, and well, life, I forgot to type up my review. Last week, after freaking out about never reviewing it, I decided to re-read this AMAZING, MUST READ NOVEL and here we are today – review day!

A perfect combination of mystery, suspense, and passionate romance, The Shadow continues William and Raven’s story. After that cliff-hanger ending in The Raven, I craved this book like I crave my next breath. I needed to read more, and Sylvain Reynard did not disappoint!

In this novel we learned more about the underworld in the city of Florence, what threatened it, and how great of a prince William truly was. It was not easy for him to balance his love for Raven with his love for his city, all while trying to protect BOTH. Plus with traitors inside his city walls, things sure got more complicated. Not to mention the not-so-small surprise I did NOT see coming AT ALL which made everything worse for William.

SR’s words flowed effortlessly, as they always do. This author can’t write a bad novel to save his life! The plot and character development were top notch and I enjoyed seeing everything unfold along the way. I had no problem whatsoever envisioning all the scenes as I read them. As I turned the pages, my need to read more increased. I was desperate for answers.

If there’s one thing about Mr. Reynard’s books that I truly adore (aside from his phenomenal story-telling talent!) is his knack for setting descriptions. I am now dying to visit Florence!! Every, single time I read one of his books, I want to move to Europe! Can’t help it! I love learning more about the different cultures and SR ignites that fire inside me with each of his books!

All in all, The Shadow (and this entire series) is a MUST READ, hands-down. Each book, to me, has been a complete page-turner from the very beginning till the very end! And what an ending!! Gah! I need the next book…pronto! Oh, and a HUGE plus for me in this series (and for any Gabriel’s Inferno Trilogy fans out there) was the fact that we got more of Gabriel and Julia! Eek!

If you’re a fan of Paranormal Romances, you cannot miss out on the Florentine series by Sylvain Reynard! FIVE BRILLIANT STARS!

A 2016 TOP FAVORITE BOOK!

- ABOUT THE AUTHOR -
SYLVAIN REYNARD
I'm interested in the way literature can help us explore aspects of the human condition - particularly suffering, sex, love, faith, and redemption. My favourite stories are those in which a character takes a journey, either a physical journey to a new and exciting place, or a personal journey in which he or she learns something about himself/herself.

I'm also interested in how aesthetic elements such as art, architecture, and music can be used to tell a story or to illuminate the traits of a particular character. In my writing, I combine all of these elements with the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of goodness.

I try to use my platform as an author to raise awareness about the following charities: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation, WorldVision, Alex's Lemonade Stand, and Covenant House. For more information, see my Twitter account.

— ABOUT THE AUTHOR: ANNE JOLIN
Hey y’all,
I was born and raised in Ladner, a small farm town just outside Vancouver, Canada. I grew up riding horses, shooting guns, and driving in trucks.

I never expected to be an author. A massage therapist? Yes. Take over the family construction company? Yes. But an author? No. Writing was something that snuck up on me and rooted itself into my life. It was beautiful to discover that love, and I’m truly grateful to say I’ve found my passion.

Since I’ve always been a creative person, it feels amazing to harness all of that energy and use it to tell a story I love. I enjoy incorporating bits of my real life into the stories I write. What parts are true? Hah. I’ll never tell—what would be the fun in that?

If I could leave y’all with one thing, it’s that life’s far too short to not live it out loud. Drown in your passions, hold on tight to the things that inspire you, and chase your dreams relentlessly. I can promise you without a doubt that you won’t regret it. I know I don’t.

Mad love,
Anne Jolin

“What the hell are you doing? I don’t need a paper trail, nor do I need to disappear from radar anytime soon.” Her facial expression was pleading for me to back off, but I couldn’t. Everything that I saw told me to rescue her at whatever costs.

I grabbed her by the arms. “Look at me, Robin.” She kept averting her eyes. “Damn it! I said Look. At. Me.”

Her body stopped shaking, and her eyes focused intently on mine. “Something’s going on here, and I don’t like what I’m seeing. You make enough money that you shouldn’t have to be living like this. I can’t in good conscience walk out of here tonight knowing that you’ve had your place broken into. I need you to go through it and let me know if anything’s been taken. I also need you to pile all the things you want to take with you on the bed, since Prescott’s security team will be here in fifteen minutes or less.”

She opened her mouth to speak, but I wouldn’t let her. Instead I silenced her lips with mine, kissing her with the intent on making her mindless for a moment so I could take a look at the piece of paper she’d stuffed into her pocket.

Her lips tasted slightly of salt, from her earlier crying, and of coffee. I had only meant for the kiss to be a distraction, but I was swamped with sensations that I hadn’t experienced in a long time. I found my hands reaching down to cup her ass and pull her closer to me. The effect must have been mutual because I found her arms around my neck and her legs wrapping around my waist as if I was a life preserver keeping her afloat in an ocean of craziness.

The moment Robin tried to undo my belt, I snapped back to the present and pushed her against the wall for added leverage. I used one hand to hold both of her wrists. Trying to seek passage into her mouth, I continued to kiss and nip at her outer lips. I managed to slip my fingers into her pocket and sneak out the paper without her even knowing.

Her kiss was lighting up my entire body from within. I found myself hard, wanting, needing some form of relief. I hadn’t been this hard since…

The mood was quickly shattered, when the phone rang. I recognized the ring-tone and knew I had to answer my mother’s call. Leave it to my mother to cock block me.

Groaning in frustration, I pulled back from the kiss. I leaned my forehead against hers. “I’m sorry. I need to return my mother’s call. She’s probably wondering why I haven’t picked up Nicola yet.”

Her breathing was labored and her eyes half-hooded, looking like I felt – needy. “That’s okay.” I could hear the disappointment in her voice. “I shouldn’t have let you come up and I…”

I put my finger on her lips to silence her. “You’ve hidden a lot of things from me, from everyone, and it stops tonight. I know something is going on in your life. It’s obvious by the looks of things that you need help. You should know by now that being part of Prescott International is like being a member of the family; if one person is in need, we all pitch in and help out.”

She tried to unwrap herself from my waist, but I held her firmly against the wall and pressed my hard length into her belly so she could feel how much she affected me. “Oh,” was her only remark.

“I know you’re going to try and argue with me. I can see the spirit you have at work popping up right now, but I’m taking charge here. I’m sorry if I come on a bit strong, but I don’t like what I’m seeing tonight. I want to ensure you’re safe.

After some time dating, Hadley and Nick form a deep bond. But insecurity sets in when Hadley discovers her boyfriend once had a huge crush on her friend—who just happens to be the beautiful former teen TV star, Simone Hendrickson.

The past is the past—or so they say…

Hadley confronts Nick, who confesses about his history with Simone. Though he claims to only have eyes for Hadley now, it’s hard to believe—especially when she’s blindsided with the news that Nick and Simone kissed after school.

Now Hadley must determine who is telling the truth. Love, betrayal, friendship…who needs soap opera drama when you’re busy competing with a star?
