Mia Murphy may be married to the man of her dreams. But the man in her dreams is the one that got away—her high school crush.
Mia’s stuck in a rut, just like every other stay-at-home mom, and the only thing saving her from her monotonous routine is her perfect husband, Declan. He’s gorgeous, he adores her, and the man stole her heart with his sexy singing voice. Mia feels like the luckiest girl in the world, until she discovers that Mr. Perfect is not Mr. Faithful. Mia is devastated. Everything she once believed about Declan and their marriage is now covered in a big cloud of doubt and regret. On impulse, she kicks the cheating bastard out, pushing them into a separation that could mean the end of the picture-perfect couple.
But when Mia receives an invitation to her high school reunion, she finds herself abandoning the present for the oh-so-alluring pull of the past. Although her heart still belongs to her husband, inescapable thoughts of her crush, Noah, resurface. And ten years later, Noah isn’t afraid to make his move. When the build-up of fantasies and ‘what ifs' comes to a head, sparks fly and it’s Mia’s turn to question if her marriage is everything she wants out of life. Searching for answers, Mia dives head first into dating Noah, falling further away from her husband and closer to her old flame.
But Declan’s not giving up so easily. Mia is his one and only and he’s not about to let another man win her heart.
Review:
4 Stars!
Emotional and
REAL. “Man of My Dreams” is a book with a refreshingly realistic set of characters
and plot line.
“I
don’t want to be together for the kids. I want you here because you love me and
need me…only me.”
Mia and Declan
have been married for 4 years and have two gorgeous little girls. Like any real
life couple, their marriage has its ups and downs… especially where “sexy time”
is concerned. Feeling disconnected from his wife, Declan does something stupid.
He falls into temptation… well, sort of. Heart-broken and devastated, Mia kicks
him out.
“Being
away from you has been like losing a limb. I’ve been lost without you. Empty.
Please forgive me for being such an ass.” – Declan
We are taken
back and forth in time throughout the book, and we get to see Mia and Declan in
various stages of their relationship. We see them meet and start dating, well
into their relationship, early into their marriage, and finally, we see them
during present-day. These different scenes caused me to have a love/hate
relationship with Declan – more love than hate, though.
“I
know you’re going to be a part of my future and I’m ready to make love to you because I love you. I’m in love with
you, Mia and I know we’re young, but I’m pretty sure I want you to be my first and my last.” – Declan
“You
are the love of my life and I can’t imagine living it without you.” - Declan
I 100%
understand why Mia fell in love with him. I mean, the guy can be SUPER romantic
and downright swoon worthy, yet at the same time, he has his douche-y moments. But
honestly though, overall, Declan seems like a guy that many women would date in
real life… myself included. The author didn’t “fairytale” him up. Does that make sense? I guess in my
heart, I know that despite his mistake, he truly LOVES Mia and his girls. He’s just human and maybe needed a wake-up
call… Again, not sure if I’m making much sense, here. It’s just that this book
had me on an emotional rollercoaster where the characters were concerned. Not
only do we see Mia and Declan as a couple, but we also see Mia and Noah, too, under special circumstances,
of course.
You see, while
being separated from her husband, Mia attends her 10-year high school reunion.
There, she runs into none other than her high school crush, Noah. Having her
life revolve around Declan since college, has made her wonder “what if” where
Noah is concerned. So she takes this opportunity to basically see “what could
be”. I’m telling you, this book was like an emotional mind-fuck. If that even
makes sense.
“Mia,
I’ll take you anywhere you want to go. I don’t want this night to end because
tomorrow you go back to belonging to someone else.” – Noah
Noah is the
perfect gentleman. He makes my HEART swoon. Simply put, he is perfect, I swear.
He treats Mia like his queen and values her to the maximum. He’s even completely
understanding and accepting of her/their special situation. We also get a few
scenes of Mia and Noah during high school and college. Which did not help with
that emotional mind-fuck I mentioned earlier. Haha!! I was feeling so TORN
while reading!!! *Sigh*
“If
I would have made a move that night at The Room, the night we were both back
from college, maybe you wouldn’t be going through all of this right now. Who
knows? It could have been you and me living in that house, raising two kids.
And I certainly wouldn’t need some chick at a bar to remind me of what I had.”
– Noah
The different
flashbacks throughout the book, allow us as readers to connect emotionally with
Mia and her predicament. I have to admit though, I can’t help but feel
frustrated with her, even though I mainly
understand her. It’s just that to me, if she wants to go out and “explore”
certain feelings, doing it while still technically married, isn’t the way to
go.
But relax. There’s
a happy ending, yes. A bit rushed, but there none the less. Mia does end up
choosing ONE. And I’m happy to say it’s the one I wanted her to choose.
However, I can’t help but feel crushed for the one that did NOT get his happy
ending. I really want…. no, scratch that, I need that other guy to get his book. I desperately want him to get
his happy ending… I need that closure! Hahaha!!! So, I guess the ending was
bitter-sweet to me. It has taken me TWO days to be able to write this review,
and honestly, I STILL feel emotionally confused. But I guess it’s a good thing
that the author has managed to keep me feeling the side effects of the story…
even days after finishing it.
“It’s
always been you, my one and only.”
