Book Review: "Imperfectly Real" by A.E. Woodward

(A Series of Imperfections #2)
Synopsis:

When nothing in your life goes right … go left.

Tyler Johnston has a life that would be the envy of most twenty-somethings. He lives in New York City, surrounded by his closest friends, has a job in a field he loves, and remains unattached—able to flit from one lady to the next without responsibly. Only problem is, Tyler isn’t in his twenties anymore…

Having watched two of his best friends fall in love and start a family, Tyler is left wondering what will become of his life. So when life hands Tyler his happy ever after, he struggles with his conscience. Can something be right when it’s so very, very wrong? Because everyone knows that two wrongs don’t make a right. In fact, most of the time, they just make things a whole lot worse.

This is the second book in the ‘Series of Imperfections’ series. Imperfectly Perfect (book one) is about Shane and Emma and this book is about Tyler. This was told in a single POV standpoint even though we have “chapters” written in Elizabeth’s POV. It really is all Tyler….

Tyler, Rob, Shane and Emma all still live together in the condo with baby Felix….comfy and cozy. Life continues on, but they have a baby in the house and they have a few changes they have made, but they still are the best of friends and always hanging out.

One day, Elizabeth is there visiting….and Tyler takes a double take on Emma’s little sister. He starts to see something he didn’t think he saw before. Problem? Emma is married to Mason. This story is all about a forbidden love and what happened to the little girl Elizabeth used to be. The journey Tyler takes is one of self-discovery and realizations, but not just for him but for Elizabeth too.

I reached over and took her hand in mine. Her fingers fit between mine as if they were made to. My gaze fell to our hands and my heart skipped a beat in my chest when I realized that I liked how her skin felt on mine.

Tyler was the ‘big brother’ to Elizabeth growing up….but he left at a very vulnerable time for her. We get to see a lot of Tyler’s memories play out on what happened during their childhood and what Elizabeth truly meant to him all those years ago. We also get to see what she means to him currently….especially with his memories flooding him.

I heard Elizabeth laugh, and my heart thumped annoyingly in response.
What the hell?
I hadn’t heard her laugh since we were kids….I guess I’d forgotten how infection it was. A smile spread across my face in response.

The story of Shane and Emma continues in this book as well. Tyler played a huge role in their relationship and Shane and Emma know this. They make memorable occasions to include Tyler and they are very fitting. The deeper Tyler gets with Elizabeth, the more it affects the whole Sloan family. Rob is trying to be the good friend he is, but Tyler isn’t listening to his advice.

Once I reached the top landing I stopped and spun around to face him. “At this point in my life, Rob, I really just don’t give a fuck. I want to be happy, and for whatever reason Liz makes me forget all the bullshit in my life. She makes me smile in spite of myself and right now that’s what I want.”

“Dude, you’re risking a lot…” he started to argue.

I felt my anger rising. “Don’t you think I know that? I appreciate your concern, Rob, truly I do. It shows me what a great friend you are.” I sighed. “But it’s my life, and Ill fuck it up however I damn well please.”

Rob is the man and, despite his partying ways, has a good head on his shoulders…and is full of good practical advice. Tyler is feeling things he didn’t know existed and he runs the gamut of emotions inside his OWN head, from anger to guilt to happiness to love. He feels guilty for leaving Elizabeth all those years ago….he feels anger for the situation he has gotten himself into, he feels happiness when he is around Elizabeth and a new emotion of “love”.  The anger comes when he has to deal with the knowledge that he knows he isn’t doing the right thing and that makes him mad even with his closest friends.

The ending of the book surprised me with the way the author took it, and we do get a sneak peek into the secretive Rob and his past that we know nothing about.
