Book Review: "Breathless" by Eve Carter

(Jesse, Book 1)

Synopsis:

The young, hot professional Motocross rider, Jesse Morrison, knows how to leave an impression. Except lately, it has mostly been bad impressions. Frustrated and wounded, he surrounds himself with women, booze and drugs, until one day, he finds himself in a world of trouble. Kicked out by his brother, he relocates to California for the summer to help his uncle open Rookies, a local sports bar.

In Santa Monica, Jesse meets the one woman who can lead him back on the right path, the beautiful 22 year old, Niki Milani. Only problem, she is not interested. Niki has her own demons to fight. A past that left her emotional abandoned by her own blood, her father. She keeps her heart guarded and finds it difficult to trust a man again. Especially not a bad boy player who is even more messed up than her. However, Jesse never backs down from a challenge. Blinded by a sizzling attraction, he is determined to prove to Niki that there is more to him than what appears on the surface. That he is the one who can heal her heart.

The story of Jesse and Niki is a New Adult Romance that will leave you breathless.

Amazon also has this other cover which I think is HOT! So, I decided to include it here :)

Breathless (Jesse, #1)

Review:
4 Stars

A story about love and self discovery, "Breathless" introduces us to Jesse and Niki. As we're taken through their journey, we quickly learn how, though in different ways, they are both equally lost. Jesse was out of control, practically about to ruin his life with drugs, booze, and women. While as Niki was going through life yet not living it. She only did what her father and her stuck up boyfriend wanted and expected her to do. Fun right? NOT.

About to become a father, Jesse's older brother Jimmy, grew tired of basically saving his ass time after time, so he asked Jesse to go to California. There Jesse could help out their uncle Kenny with his bar and hopefully get his act together.

"My motto was to 'get fucked up and score as much pussy as possible. Life is short'. Tomorrow I won't even remember the girl's name, hell in ten minutes I won't remember the girl's name."

In California, Jesse never expected to come across the woman that would change his ways and Niki sure as hell wasn't looking for 'the bad boy' she couldn't help but be attracted to. From the moment they laid eyes on each other, they felt an instant pull... but Niki still had a boyfriend.

"I'm not stopping until you're mine."

"Jason doesn't deserve you. I'll treat you better."

Since meeting Niki, Jesse went all out for her. You could say he pretty much treated her like a princess and gave her the respect she deserved. He mainly did what her father and boyfriend didn't do, he respected her and believed in her.

"I don't know what he does to me, but he's got my heart." - Niki

Niki had finally started to take control over her life's decisions, so at first I really liked her character... but that sort of changed throughout the book. The way she reacted or rather, overreacted to certain things really threw me off. For example, Jesse got into two fights, both times defending someone. Niki's reasoning behind her decision to push him away because of those fights baffled and disappointed me beyond belief. On one hand, she was starting to really live her life the way she wanted, but on the other, she was holding herself back coming up with these lame excuses. *sigh*
I believe this is the reason I'm giving this book 4 stars. I just lost the little connection I had with Niki which caused me to not fully connect with the book. I want to point out, that this is totally personal. Whether a reader connects or not with a story line or characters does not reflect on the author or even the book, so don't let this stop you from reading it.

"Breathless" had a generally interesting story line that kept me fairly entertained. This was just the beginning in Niki and Jesse's long journey which is why a lot of things were left untouched/unanswered. That said, you should know there's a plot cliffhanger. I am very much looking forward to see where Jesse and Niki's story takes them next. I'll definitely be reading the sequel, "Fearless". I recommend this book!

"He knew I was his and he was mine."
