Book Review: Alex by Sawyer Bennett

Alex
by Sawyer Bennett
~ SYNOPSIS ~
Hockey star Alexander Crossman has a reputation as a cold-hearted player on and off the rink. Pushed into the sport by an alcoholic father, Alex isn’t afraid to give fans the proverbial middle finger, relishing his role as the MVP they love to hate. Management, however, isn’t so amused. Now Alex has a choice: fix his public image through community service or ride the bench. But Alex refuses to be molded into the Carolina Cold Fury poster boy . . . not even by a tempting redhead with killer curves.

As a social worker, Sutton Price is accustomed to difficult people—like Alex, who’s been assigned to help her create a drug-abuse awareness program for at-risk youth as part of the team’s effort to clean up his image. What she doesn’t expect is the arrogant smirk from his perfect lips to stir her most heated fantasies. But Sutton isn’t one to cross professional boundaries—and besides, Alex doesn’t do relationships . . . or does he? The more she sees behind Alex’s bad-boy façade, the more Sutton craves the man she uncovers.

I.Love.Sawyer.Bennett.

Yep….that about sums it up. I have been reading her books since before I became a blogger….and I have to admit, I seriously think she is officially a ‘go-to’ author for me. Her books aren’t always the same….but they are always good to me! I haven’t found one that I haven’t enjoyed. Now that I have gotten that off my chest, let’s dive into the deliciousness that is Alex.  I highlighted so much in this book! I’m sure my review will feel all over the place….I loved the pace of the book, the dual POV and the way things worked out. It was just an easy, GREAT read.

Let us dive into this one, shall we? First of all, Alex Crossman…..Alex, Alex, Alex. He is dreamy…..sexy, hot and has a perpetual 5 o’clock shadow.  That’s what I envision. Scruff….so sexy on an alpha male.
With a strong jaw.
And a nice body.
And a hockey player.
Oh oops!! I digress. Ok….so on the outside, Alex was delicious, but sadly on the inside he was just an angry player. One that didn’t even love the game. He had some deep rooted issues to work through, and his team and management needed to do something quick.  Cold, hard, emotionless Alex needs an attitude adjustment. STAT!! Mr. “I-Have-No-Emotion” walked through life with a chip on his shoulder and anger emanating from his body.

Crossman for  MVP, Most Valuable Prick.
Classic! I’m the player they love to hate, and I could give a fuck.

Insert Sutton. Sutton was this beautiful breath of fresh air. She was a drug and alcohol counselor that worked with kids and she had a lifetime of experience needed to have the heart that she did. I really loved her character and the strength that she possessed. She had this ability to compartmentalize everything that happened and find a reason and accept it. Not a pushover…but a very perceptive and smart young lady. I really liked that she wasn’t some weak, whiny girl that didn’t get her way….I really enjoyed her character.  And after their first meeting (first!!), Alex had Sutton thinking naughty thoughts….but she knew she wasn’t going to cross that professional working relationship boundary.  Or so she thought!!

“I’ve never given much of a fuck about labels and lines, Sutton. I do what I want, and I very much want to see you on a personal level.”

The pull between these two was unmistakable and undeniable!!! They come together with force! I just smiled….like, ahhhh!!! <drool> Ugh!! <grin> OMG! <chills> Yes! Yess!! Yesss!!!!! I truly loved how sensual and expressive their love making was. It was so telling, even though no words were exchanged. The eyes. It’s all in the eyes….and Alex, no matter how much he tried to hide, Sutton could see it.

“I want to fuck you so bad I physically ache, Sutton. It actually hurts. But I’ve always given in to my base desires, and slaked my lust without a care in the world as to who I was with or how fast and hard I’d give it to her. I don’t want that with you. I want something more.”

This book continued on with such ease, and they had a really good vibe about them with hilarious, sexy banter. They were so playful with each other, yet so intense as well. But with deep rooted anger comes demons, and with demons comes stupid decisions, regrettable ones at that. Sometimes, those demons get the better of us. Poor Alex couldn’t get past his demons and his relationship with Sutton suffered because of it.

It’s not just me seducing her though. She’s completely seducing me, and she has no fucking clue she’s even doing it. Since this is the first time in my life I’ve ever experienced something like this, I want to savor the feeling. I want to commit it to memory, because I’m bound and determined to fuck it up somehow. This is all probably too good to be a long-term reality for someone like me.

I really, really, really enjoyed this book….it was such a GOOD read. I want everyone to just read it. Lots of chills, lots of giggles-smiles and lots of sweet moments. I have officially fallen in love with Alex. I have been very lucky to have a few 5* reads lately and this one was just added to that list. Now, after saying this….Garrett’s book will be a very redeeming book. There is something about a playboy that has a heart. I’m so excited to read his book!!! Make sure you add that to your TBR from Goodreads.

*I was given an ARC for an honest review.*
