Blog Tour Stop: "Surrender to Fate" by Jacelyn Rye

Surrender to Fate
(Fate's Path, Book 1)
SYNOPSIS:
Some say fate holds the cards. But what if love deals the hand? No love goes untested. Ever. Indeed, true love is left to prove itself. And that is exactly where fate steps in to play the game.

For William and Sarah, that game begins with growing up, in the unspoiled mountains of Colorado. In a time and space as clear as the Rocky Mountain skies above, these young souls together learn about life, what matters most, what endures, what doesn’t, and about love. Innocent young love moves ever so surely toward lives they both can picture, lives spent loving each other in a place they know so well and cherish.

Will and Sarah are ecstatically swept away in the swells of new love. And it is in their rarefied bliss that they make the fragile promise of first love, a promise that fate will soon rock and pound into doubt, guilt, and epiphany.

Unexpected and unprepared, these young lovers are suddenly torn apart, first by distance, and then by the far greater pressures of temptation that test the very fidelity of their heart-held promise. No longer able to console each other, hold each other, touch each other, they face the inevitable decision: move on to other loves, or cling to the faith that they will someday be together, again.
Will and Sarah stare down an unknown path, sensing destiny will not wait long before it comes to take them. Wracked with doubt, they wonder if their love was real. Caged by guilt, they both feel tempted by others intent on stealing their hearts.

Fate plays hardest when love is tested. And Will and Sarah are no exception, letting go of their happy past to embrace hope for an uncharted future. Love plays hardest when fate tests. And so it is, even through their trials of the heart, Will and Sarah never really stop loving each other. Theirs is a love so real and pure that each just wants the other to find happiness, even if it's with another.

But fate does not surrender so easily. Dealing blow upon blow, both Will and Sarah are each struck by jolting events that take them to the very edge of life, itself.

Sarah and Will hold tightly to their past, but steadfast promises begin to wane. Life continues, filled with romance, drama, and two souls yearning to understand the challenges brought with coming of age, and learning that fate is ultimately in control. What happens to love when life is on the line? Can they both relinquish control when love is on the line? Will fate even allow them to find out?

Review:
5 Stars!

It's been a LONG time since I've savored a story. Honestly, savored….as in, didn’t want it to end and just absorbed the words as they were read. I felt like I didn’t want to, but I could put it down, swirl the thoughts in my head, and go back and get immersed again. I didn’t want to put it down, for sure, but I had kids that wanted to eat. Mommy’s reading!! Hello?? Yeah, that didn’t work. I think a great word to use for how I felt would be engulfed. The story swept me up and engulfed me. I felt hugged and cradled. Gosh….to describe it will be difficult, if not impossible. It was unparalleled. I am still shaking my head.

This book was beyond amazing......it was more than words can describe. It flowed beautifully and was written masterfully. This is a story about young love and the emotions that run deeper than can be conveyed. If you have ever been in love, then you will understand the emotions and feelings in this book. The way this book was written allowed you to feel ALL the emotions that came from each character. This was written in third person POV, so the emotions that were expressed were so realistic. They were deep and real, and I am still just shaking my head. I am still just saying wow. Truly and honestly, this book made me feel everything from anticipation to heartache; from love to pain; from fear to excitement. It made me feel the gamut of emotions.

This book was set in the late 30’s and early 40’s, so we got a whole new approach to how things were back then and how simple life really was. Not clouded by technology and modern day gadgets, this book really made you slow down and enjoy the time. This book was about innocent love, but also a very deep and commanding love that truly moved you. I personally felt that this was a very powerful way to write this story….it erased the ability for a weak heroine to get out of not talking to her Hero. It erased the ability for ridiculous misconceptions. Don’t get me wrong, there were some….but the period in which this was written, that is understandable. It wasn’t a weak book by any means…..this book was unforgettable.

The storyline takes place in Colorado. This is a love story about Will and Sarah and how they come to find out about love, what it really feels like and what it truly means. Will and Sarah have grown up around each other and have been the best of friends since they were very young. Will is ever the gentleman, but he is still a man with desires. He is a hardworking man that is on a farm near Sarah’s. Sarah is a very naïve young woman that finds out about her feelings as she grows….learned with a certain innocence and honesty to them, which, when written correctly, is a beautiful read. Oh gosh….can you tell I loved this book?? It just flowed. I truly can’t stop thinking about it!! Like, I want to lie down in a soft field, under the sun, and just read more of it!!!

Me Ware Wo
Once something leaves a profound mark on the heart, the mark is always there.

Since the synopsis does not tell you about what actually happens as we go through the book, I will refrain from telling you too much since I hate spoilers. I copied so many quotes in my book and then realized that I can’t really put them here, because it will take away from the ‘other’ side of the storyline. AAACK!! I will tell you that this is officially on my BEST BOOKS of 2014 list. I still can’t stop thinking about it. It definitely left a mark….

Amazing. Brilliant. Phenomenal. Wow. You know how when you read a genre and immediately liken all books, in that genre, to that one author that set the bar for you? Jacelyn Rye has set that bar, for me, for historical romances. This book left me speechless and I wish my review could do it even a tiny amount of justice, and if it does….then I have merely scratched the surface. This book was extraordinary.

5 Amazerful Fantasmical stars…..just wow.

Love,
Bethany

Fate's Path Series

Shattered by Fate
(Fate's Path #2)
Synopsis:
One heart cannot remember. Another heart cannot forget. Both hearts reach toward something to grasp. For Sarah, it is her past. For Will, it is to bring that past back. The only thing standing squarely in their way — is their future. Each has promised their heart and life to another. But where happiness should be, instead are the dark billowing clouds of a storm of reckoning. The thunder of regret splits a horizon now raining down upon them in shards of shattered promises and unreachable memories. In Book One of this three-part saga, fate seemed it would not be denied, bringing Sarah and Will together in a turbulent world, uniting young hearts for the right reason: love. But — almost as if it has eyes — fate sees to it that no love that is meant to be is allowed to be, without it being tested to the passionate edges of chance. Accidents. Small ones are remembered and retold with a laugh. Useful ones are celebrated. But shattering ones — those are the ones that slip from the fingers of fate. The kinds that are followed by silence as it roars the sound of life changing. And it is this pounding drone that Sarah and Will — once inseparable — now hear when they listen to their hearts. After her accident, Sarah awakens in a hospital room and into a very different life. Will, accidentally buried by heavy timber when he heroically saves a fellow worker, is also delivered into his own unforeseen, disoriented new life. Destiny’s dust never settles. And nothing is clear when doubts appear. Sarah is betrothed to Adley, while Will is engaged to Margaret, yet both are still connected to each other by an indescribable draw seemingly groping out from the deepest reaches of fate. A fate that deliberately leaves the door of temptation cracked open, giving Will a yearning peek at the naked truth of Sarah, who reaches out with the same tortured passions. A fate that leaves both to fight the desperate desires of wanting what each knows they cannot have. A fate that dares them to ask, “What will happen if I finally feel you?”

About the author:
Jacelyn Rye

Jacelyn Rye is many things. She can be as alluring as the love that flows from her pen: pure, honest, simple. But then, like a storm that suddenly appears over the mountain, she can also have you running for shelter where there’s no place to hide. Like life, itself, Jacelyn delivers the hard with the soft, the pain with the joy, the instant with the forever. All of it, for a reason. And it’s there that one can best enter her life.

“I believe in signs, I believe everything happens for a reason,” she’ll tell you. If you know someone like that, you already know a primal piece of Jacelyn — a person who actually listens to the Universe because there, she knows she’ll find more than answers, she’ll find reasons. And those reasons give her insights about nature, and human nature, both of which she invites us to explore with her.

Growing up in the blue sky country of Colorado doesn’t leave an impression, it becomes a lifeblood. For Jacelyn, the clarity of that truth flows through her stories, her characters and her inherent spirituality that somehow knows faith, in the end, triumphs over despair.

Through her storytelling — firmly stimulated by that early country life that taught her to always be prepared when venturing forth — Jacelyn’s uncanny ability to “see” what could happen takes readers into a crystal ball where the future’s many possible outcomes await in a swirl of incandescence, right down to the details of smell, touch, fear, love.

Because life also presents its possibilities in dreams, Jacelyn holds dear that open door. “My dreams mean a lot to me. I listen to them, solve problems in them, learn from them,” she confides. It figures, then, that when you read her stories, you’d best get ready for a trip with an original dream weaver.

And then, there’s serendipity. To know Jacelyn is to accept a dance with chance. She accepted one such chance when she moved from her beloved Colorado to an unknown life awaiting her in Southern California, where she lives today. “I knew another beautiful world was out there. I was ready for adventure,” she says, with the confidence that proves her faith is more than just words. “I moved from Colorado as soon as I graduated from college, thanks to a great job offer. The night after I received my job offer, I saw a commercial that said, ‘California, find yourself here.’ In that moment, I stopped debating the move and took it as a sign that my adventure would be found in California.”

As Jacelyn does so well, she shares those adventures in her writing. In her first book series, you’ll find Jacelyn’s experiences of this major life change play out in Sarah, who also moves from Colorado to California. “What I’ve seen and felt enable me to write realistically about how a Colorado mountain girl feels about living in California.”

In the quiet mornings, you’ll find Jacelyn savoring her coffee, outside. To her, it’s all about listening, breathing in, appreciating being here for another day. And of course, there’s time spent in the mountains, fishing, wading in creeks with the people she loves. Curiously, this girl who comes from the mile-high mountains, still fears the miles-deep ocean she frequently visits, but only to sink her toes in the hot sand and watch, in awe and respect, the thundering surf.

On any given day, be it in the mountains, at the beach, or on her terrace, Jacelyn is dreaming and writing, her way of sharing something meaningful with those who come to know her.

One thing is for sure, wherever she goes, wherever she’s been, Jacelyn is aware and thankful for the gifts around her. Indeed, although she does not get back to Colorado that often, she’s there in spirit, and in absolute detail, in a moment’s call. “The smells, the sound aspen leaves make when the wind asks them to dance, how tall pines gently sway back and forth against a backdrop of the bluest blue I’ve ever known.” That’s someone who takes it all in, who takes it all with her, and who offers it to everyone who opens her books.

Review:
4 Stars!

Sloane and Killian……they had a forbidden love affair to start. Sloane loved Killian. She was underage at 17, and he was 6 years older, but love doesn’t have an age barrier, as we all know….the heart has a mind of its own. Sloane wanted him and he wanted her. Their affections for one another ran deep and they had years of build up behind them since they were family friends and grew up around each other. I could definitely feel the intensity between the two of them.

“God, Sloane…this is so fucking wrong. You don’t know what you’re asking for. The things that I want to do to you right now…you’re too young. Sex isn’t always champagne and roses, princess. I think if you knew how wild it gets—you would run. You should run.” ~Killian

One particular night, it got very hot between the two of them….and I think it really set the pace for the ‘rest’ of the story. As you can see, Killian let her know at the ripe age of 17 that sex wasn’t what you always think it is. It was definitely a ‘telling’ side to him.

Love only knows what the heart tells it. So when circumstances cause heartbreak and confusion, the heart grows cold and it starts to hate.  Poor Sloane was handed a lifetime worth of grief in one night, and the poor girl had her world turned upside down!!

Lies are told. Actions are taken. Hearts get broken.

We jump to four years later and Sloane isn’t living ‘her’ life for herself. She is under lock and key. Unfortunately, after everything that happened, she was handed the worst deal ever. She was forced to live with her uncle and his wife, and the way she had to live; that was SO NOT COOL. She also lost the best thing that ever happened to her….she lost the one true love of her life. Killian was her everything, yet he turned away from her. She fought for years to find out what happened and where he went, but she didn’t get any answers….only more pain. So Sloane was biding her time until she could do what she had to do in order to make life work out in her favor.

Killian hated her….literally hated her, yet we didn’t know ‘why’. The pain he has, the anger he holds onto and the heartache he bears adds to the backstory of his suffering. I’m pretty sure Sloane hasn’t moved on mentally or emotionally…even though it’s been 4 ½ years, so I imagine that she hid it rather well. When Killian shows up one night at an event, we see that she doesn’t exactly want to deal with him, but he sure is a great site.

Killian is really here—right in front of me. I silently chastise myself for thinking that even with his body concealed beneath layers of clothing he is the sexiest man alive. ~Sloane

At this point, he storms over to her and informs her that he has come to take her with him. Now, she doesn’t exactly put up a fight, but she isn’t going easily. She needs to find out what’s going on, and when he tells her why, she has no other choice but to go with him. She’s a very smart, but compassionate girl and so she follows him out. She doesn’t make a scene and lets him take her, but when she finds out the whole ‘deal’, she is shocked. I am too!! She now belongs to him. Ummmm….yeah. What??? Yes….she belongs to him.

Against my will, my jaw drops as I stare at the clearly insane man standing in front of me. At some point Killian has gone from being a jerk to a crazy asshole. ~Sloane

After everything settles and she knows that she is going to be with him, the conversation flows better between them, but he is a very cold man. He is so mean to her, but this is also where I started to see that he is also hiding his feelings. We see that she still has feelings for him as well, since they surfaced rather quickly, but her mind is fighting with her heart.

It’s been years since I felt this…charge. I miss it though, every single day. I keep wondering when, or if, this feeling will ever go away, but the truth is that I realize that the answer is no. ~Sloane

This love that they had at one point was pure and intense, so it didn’t truly go away. No matter how many lies were told and believed, no matter how much anger and betrayal came in between them, their love was there. It was buried deep within her and she didn’t really know how to grasp the fact that he took her and that she is starting to feel things again.  Her heart and mind are warring with each other. She truly fought with herself about this a few times and sometimes made me laugh.

“Meanwhile, my inner ho, traitor that she is, jumps up and down, clapping like a goddamn idiot”. ~Sloane

The story is a very deep, intricate tale of how lies and deceit play in evil minds and how things get twisted out of control, but it’s also an extreme love story. It was action packed and had many twists, ones that I didn’t even see coming!

“There are always choices. You made yours a long time ago. It’s time for you to feel the consequences.” ~Killian

I loved, absolutely LOVED, seeing the fact that her teenage crush….no, her teenage LOVE, came back to her under crazy circumstances and with that, the most intense love affair took place. He couldn’t fight what he knew all along, and she couldn’t either. Diving into this book, not knowing how this all worked out, I felt that this was an enjoyable book. I wasn’t too sure that I could see their love resurface after what happened and how it all took place, but the heart knows!! The heart knows….and the love was there. I loved watching it grow!!

I give this book a very intriguing 4 stars. I honestly felt that I had to continue reading it…I needed to find out what was causing all this heartache that Killian was fighting. I didn’t want to put the book down and all the spins and turns really threw me for loops!

Sir Walter Scott said it best: Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. And trust me when I say this; this quote ran through my head during the WHOLE book……and then it was quoted at the end book. Great reference there!!

Love,
Bethany

Review:
5 Stars!

Ohmygosh….. Oh. My. Gosh. I am still reeling from that ending!!!! I NEED book two…yesterday! Such a great read!!!! M.R. Joseph managed to evoke so many different emotions from me that I decided this deserved a solid 5-star rating. Don’t wait to read this! Really, don’t! Giving In is a sexy, funny, and emotional book you should not miss out on!

“You made me feel things again. You made me feel whole.”

Opposites attract. Boy, oh boy, do they! Cruz and Harlow sure were exact opposites and yet, just what they needed. Not that they would EVER admit that out loud.

Cruz….was an asshole. Funny, but a jerk. Getting chapters in his POV allowed us to see this first hand. He was interested in living his life care-free. He wanted to enjoy things rather than fuss over them…as simple as that. When it came to the ladies he was as honest as could be. Meet ‘em, bang ‘em, and show them the door. In and out. Simple. Easy.  Sometimes not even remembering their names. Well, all except for one. That one name that haunted his memories for an entire year.

Harlow Hannum was extremely guarded with very high walls around her heart. Always using big words to ‘scare off people’. At times, she even sounded a bit stuck up. But I promise you, she had her reasons…and what reasons!!!

Spending a relaxing summer at Sandy Cove didn’t turn out to be what Cruz and Harlow expected or even imagined. Suffice it to say, they got off on the wrong foot. In fact, they pretty much hated each other. They knew what buttons to push and Cruz sure knew how to rile up Harlow. THE MACARENA!!! OMG!! I laughed so hard during that scene! I would’ve died being in Harlow’s position! *Giggles* It seemed Cruz spent a lot of his time apologizing to Harlow for everything he put her through on a daily basis. His cocky attitude + her stubborn attitude = one hell of a funny banter!

“…the more time I spend with Cruz, the more he’s, I don’t know, what word should I use to describe him…let’s call it human?”

Things started changing. Cruz and Harlow fell into a comfortable routine. They started to really see each other. They began to get used to their company, enjoying their moments together. Without realizing, Cruz and Harlow started to change each other…for the better.

“I don’t need to be that way around Cruz. I can be me. Harlow Hannum.”

As they morphed into a couple, they faced the sad reality of ‘what came after Sandy Cove’. Not only had they gone from being practically enemies to a new couple, but now they had to manage a long distance relationship. And what’s worse…some secrets were still kept between them. Secrets that were used against them. Drama!!!!! Loved it! Kept me turning the pages, that’s for sure!

As the final chapters approached, I seriously could not stop reading. My heart was pounding. I was so nervous and anxious of what might happen next. There was one scene specifically that RUINED ME. I was livid, floored, and flat out SPEECHLESS. I could not believe what was unfolding before me. And then… THAT ENDING!!!!! Holy Cliffhanger, Batman!!! I NEED BOOK TWO! Pronto!! Whoa! Now, even though it does end in quite a scene, I recommend you do not wait another minute to read this book. It’s fantastic!!!!

“Loving someone is when you make the other person a better one.”

Book Review: "Affirmation" by Sawyer Bennett

Affirmation
(Legal Affairs #6)
SYNOPSIS:
Things are off, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Some things, however, are the same. For example, the sex with Matt is just as nuclear and consistent as it always has been.

Still… I feel like I’m holding onto Matt with my fingertips, like he’s on the verge of slipping away and I don’t know what to do.

When I started these Legal Affairs, I had no way of knowing the depth of feeling that would become involved. I had no way of knowing this man could shatter my existence.

I don’t want to be hurt, so I’m grasping hard and I can only hope that he wants me enough to hang on just as tight.

Review:
5 stars!

With this being the final installment of Sawyer’s serial series….this review comes with sadness. Why sadness? Well, this was a GREAT eff’ing story!!! It was simply magnificent. It was funny. It was hot. It was sexy. It was loving. It was everything I look for in a really good book…..but it was released in six installments, two weeks apart. Why was that better than a full length, standalone novel? Well, honestly….it probably wasn’t better, but it was sure neat the way it happened. I loved the fact that in between books on tours….I got to take an hour breather and read something that I knew was going to be a great pick-me-up in between heavy stories. This series has truly landed itself on my favorites of 2014 so far. Loved it!!

This book starts out with such sadness and hurt. I could definitely “feel” the pain that Mac was feeling. She knew something was off after Marissa gallivanted into their weekend and took Gabe. Matt was….someone else. I liken it to a switch. It just…..flipped him. He was different, and Mac new it.

Some things are the same. For example, the sex is still nuclear and consistent. We can’t get enough of each other and for that, I’m thankful. Still….I feel like I’m grasping onto Matt, like he’s on the verge of slipping away, and that is causing me a lot of anxiety.

That alone shows the angst and the pure affection and love she feels for Matt….and is afraid to lose it. She is a strong woman, don’t get me wrong. She is very strong….but we all know that the right man can make us weak. That is Matt. He is her biggest weakness. After talking it over with Macy, and spilling her concerns, Macy suggests the obvious and advises her to find out and talk to Matt to find out what’s really going on. Did I mention that there is some great humor in this book?

“Talk to Matt? Are you kidding? Like an actual conversation? Any time I try, he sidetracks me with sex. He’s deflecting me by preying on my ovaries.”

Ok…I just giggled, because even though Mac is really trying to work through her feelings knowing she has already told Matt she loves him, she is still doing it with humor. I do love their dynamic and their personalities while they are together, because they complement each other so well, but she is quirky and I love her!! She needs to do what she needs to do, and boy!! Does Mac come on strong in this book!

With Matt causing problems, because, you know, it’s always the man’s fault! Hahaha! Anyways, with Matt causing problems, Mac decides once and for all that she needs to move on….in the hardest way possible. I think my heart literally cracked in two!! My heart broke knowing the chemistry these two had, I wanted them to work! I wanted it ALL! You would think I was in love with Matt…..well, who says I’m not?

We are fucking perfect in bed together. Absolutely perfect. It just sucks that it’s the only way we seem to be compatible. ~Mac

Anyways, with the finality that Mac sets her goals with, the story took a very drastic turn. I felt the pain and the anguish that Matt and Mac both felt. We only got to see this in Mac’s POV, but Matt’s actions show him finally accepting the inevitable. And seriously….my jaw hit the floor and my heart was just in shock.

He does nothing more than bring his eyes up to mine though. They look sad for just a flash, and then he gives me a small smile.

I didn’t like the fact that he was just “accepting” of this fate!!! Fight for her dammit!!! I wanted to run and hug them both, tell them it will all be ok….and they ride off into the sunset on a white horse. Ok….dramatic much? Maybe. But I seriously loved this story SO much. It was the best short story series I have EVER read. I enjoyed it and loved reading how it all played out and how the series ended the way it did. The ending thoroughly melted me and it was perfect. Achingly perfect. *sigh*

Mac and Matt and their happily ever after deserve 5 stars with all the pomp and circumstance, for this installment, but also the entire series. I would recommend this over and over again….to anyone that wanted to read a short book in between heavy books, to anyone wanting to sit down and giggle and swoon that didn’t have a lot of time, to anyone that wanted a well written, easily enjoyable, very lovable book series.

I am sad that I don’t have something to look forward to every 2 weeks now….it was THAT good. Sawyer!!! I need more Matt and Mac!!

***An ARC of "Affirmation" was provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks!!***

Monica James resides in Melbourne, Australia, with her wonderful family, and menagerie of animals.

She is slightly obsessed with cats, chucks and lip gloss, and secretly wishes she was a ninja on the weekends.
